Different subspecies of Bt contain different toxin genes, targeting entirely different types of pests:
- Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki / thuringiensis: Targets Lepidoptera (diamondback moths, cabbage worms, cotton bollworms, fall armyworms, etc.).
- Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis: Targets Diptera (mosquito, fly, and blackfly larvae). It is widely used in public health and vector control.
- Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. tenebrionis: Targets Coleoptera (flea beetles, weevils, Colorado potato beetles, and other beetles).
