Anagrapha falcifera NPV (AfaNPV)

Anagrapha falcifera nucleopolyhedrovirus(commonly referred to as AfaNPV or AnfaNPV) is a highly efficient, broad-spectrum, and eco-friendly microbial insecticide belonging to the Baculoviridae family.

Taxonomy: Family Baculoviridae, Genus Nucleopolyhedrovirus.

Mode of Action (How it Works)

AfaNPV is a stomach poison that must be ingested by the target insect to take effect:

  1. Ingestion & Dissolution: When target larvae feed on foliage sprayed with the virus, they ingest the viral occlusion bodies (polyhedra). The highly alkaline environment of the insect’s midgut dissolves the protein matrix of the polyhedra, releasing the infectious virions.
  2. Replication & Infection: The virions selectively invade the nuclei of the pest’s midgut cells and quickly spread to other tissues (such as fat bodies and hemocytes), rapidly replicating and utilizing the pest’s internal nutrients.
  3. Liquefaction & Horizontal Transmission: Within 4 to 8 days, the infected larvae die. In the final stages, their internal organs completely liquefy. The body wall ruptures, releasing billions of new polyhedra onto the surrounding foliage. This initiates a secondary horizontal transmission cycle within the pest population, achieving a long-term control effect known as “one insect gets sick, the whole colony is eradicated.”

Key Advantages

  • Broad Host Range: Unlike many specific baculoviruses that can only infect a single pest species, AfaNPV possesses a unique broad-spectrum capability. It effectively controls over 30 species of destructive lepidopteran pests, including the European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis), diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella), cotton bollworm (Helicoverpa armigera), and various armyworms (Spodoptera spp.).
  • No Resistance Development: Because it operates via a biological cell-invasion mechanism rather than chemical neurotoxicity, pests cannot easily develop resistance to it. It remains highly lethal against “superbugs” that have developed severe resistance to conventional chemical pesticides.
  • Environmentally Safe: The virus is highly host-specific to certain insects. It is completely non-toxic to humans, livestock, birds, and aquatic life. Crucially, it does not harm beneficial insects such as honeybees, silkworms, and natural predators (e.g., ladybugs and lacewings), making it a core tool for organic and green food production.
