In insect taxonomy, the cotton bollworm (Helicoverpa armigera) and the tobacco budworm (Helicoverpa assulta) both belong to the genus Helicoverpa within the family Noctuidae of the order Lepidoptera. Because they are sibling species with a very close genetic relationship, they share an exceptionally high degree of similarity in morphology, physiology, and, most importantly, pathogen susceptibility. Consequently, HaNPV—a virus natively isolated from the cotton bollworm—demonstrates potent cross-biological activity and high virulence against the tobacco budworm.
